Plants For Containers That Will Grow Best In Your Garden

Here are 11 of our favorite foliage plants for containers. All love pale green plants with big leaves! Or pick a plant with colorful leaves, like coleus, and put it as the focal point of a combination with pale yellow flowers or deep pastel blue flowers. The versatility is your choice.

Most perennials prefer full sunlight and well-drained soil. They grow well in large pots, on sloping lawns, or in tubs, too. Many can be used outside year-round or indoors on sunny windowsills or other outside areas. Some of our favorites are rock wool, African violet, creeping phlox, purple coneflower, false primrose, true indigo, orange coneflower, alstroemeria, European Columbine, and true blue. Use a pest collar and water regularly to keep them healthy.

Rapid temperature fluctuations are a challenge for most perennials. They love to be in partial shade during the hot part of the day and then go to bedside cool shades the next morning. Tops are happy when you put them in the garden and they love the color of your flowers, too. So, choose container species that Getty images easily in medium or deep soils. You'll want to do your planting about six to eight weeks ahead of an approaching frost.

Window boxes are a perennial that thrives in shady areas like your backyard or a shady corner of your house. Be sure to dig a hole large enough to hold the plants without overcrowding them. Use plastic potting soil or a good soil-based potting soil mix in your hole. Make sure to check the drainage before planting.

Evergreens and everlashes are best planted in full sun to encourage their lush green leaves and beautiful flowers. If you have slow-growing plants like delphiniums and spider mites you can plant them inside with a light covering such as netting. The leaves of these creatures get blocked out of the sunlight and won't burn up as other plants do. There are several varieties of shady plants such as calendula, pansies, and asters. You can fill your garden with shades of purple, pink, orange, and yellow and add some wonderful evergreen foliage such as pansies, holly, and blueberries.

Plants that like the moisture of the ground, but need to be watered more frequently should be planted in a raised bed. The pots can be lined with felt so they stay moist. Plants for containers should be mulched with grass clipping or straw to keep them from drying out.

Some of the fastest-growing plants for containers are herbs and trees. For example, big fescue like a cardinal flower will fill up an entire pot within a few weeks if you plant it in the right location. Be careful when planting shrubs and vines as they will quickly spread over the area. Plant shrubs, ground covers, and flowering perennials at the base of trees and bushes. Bamboo ferns, clematis, and evergreens make wonderful additions to any garden and look spectacular against any backdrop.

Your landscape hobby could be just the ticket to relax and enjoy the fruits of your hard work. Try planting vegetables, fruits, flowers, herbs, and decorative grasses and shrubs in attractive pots. Create the perfect container garden with plants for containers using the tried and true principles of container gardening. You will be rewarded with a bountiful harvest as well as beautiful scenery.

Planting herbs and other seasonal plants can be exciting and rewarding if you choose the best plants for containers. Choose annuals, perennials, and shrubs that will thrive in cold weather. The best plants for containers can survive even the worst frost with few if any problems. If you live in an area where frosts are common, be sure to mulch the roots of your favorite plants to soften the soil during warm weather.

Shrubs, evergreens, and pine needles can add color and beauty to your container gardening efforts. These plants are excellent for window boxes, planters, and other outside areas in your garden. Some of the best container vegetable plants for containers are chives, dill, fennel, kale, marjoram, parsley, and basil. There are many more herbs, vegetables, and fruits for your enjoyment in the garden. By planting annuals, perennials, and Sunflowers, you will be sure to fill your garden with color year after year.

Plants like sweet potato, tomatoes, peppers, onions, blueberries, strawberries, and a host of others grow well for their fruit on shade-tolerant plantings. Plants like fennel, kale, and fenugreek enjoy full sun to partial shade throughout the year. There is also an abundance of wildlife for your Sun container gardening needs including deer, squirrels, and skunks. With today's advancements in seed cataloging, there are hundreds of options for Sun container gardens including African violet, crimson, blue, and white sweet potatoes, dwarf tomatoes, and more
