Buyer's Guide: Sweet Potato Plants

Caring For Your Sweet Potato Plants

When you have sweet potato plants, you are practically spoilt for choice. They are highly versatile and very hardy and are ideal for most regions in the world. Sweet potatoes are very adaptable and can grow in areas where other plants may not thrive. You will be surprised how a poor soil mix can affect your plants, so choose a good garden soil mix before planting. Sweet potatoes are very easy to grow but they do need a lot of care once they have grown. Here is a guide to help you choose the best plants for you.

African Daisies and Aronia are both good choices for sweet potato plants. These plants have similar requirements but have slightly different requirements when it comes to watering. Both need about an inch of water per week. These plants grow best in full sunshine but you will also see some shade provided by the leaves of the plant. Both have fleshy, leathery roots that are ideal for digging and have many seeds that are ready to germinate.

Sweet potato plants are best planted in rich soil, about one inch deep and if you want your plant to grow faster you should use a light amount of fertilizer. It is better to fertilize all the soil surfaces of the plant - the leaves, the ground and the bottom of the plant. Do not over-fertilize or the plant will become stunted.

Some plants require more water than others - Most sweet potato plants will do well with about an inch of water a week but do not over-fertilize. If the soil is dry and hard then you should water less often. The leaves of the plant will become green as the water dries but you should still water the plant every few days. If you live in a dry climate then you should check with a local nursery to find out what plants are suited to your area.

You need to water the plant daily, especially if it has a clay soil. This type of soil will hold more water than an organic soil and it will dry up more quickly. If you have an extremely dry climate you may choose to supplement the watering with an organic liquid such as coconut oil or vegetable oil. Never ever wash a sweet potato plant with water - the sap will burn the leaves and the plant could die. Always rinse the plant with cool water and then keep it in a cool place until it is warm enough to water again.

Do not try to shade the plant from the sun. The leaves will burn and the plant will lose its color. The soil in which the plant grows will become yellow and the plant may die. If you live in a hot part of the country you should keep the plants pot in a shady area or under the tree. In the winter months the temperature will be very cold - at least 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sweet potatoes do well in partial shade in a garden, but they will do better in full sun if you have a large area that they can get to. The soil they grow on must be rich in nutrients - it will not hold anything if it has less. The plant should be potted into about one foot of soil and about six to eight inches deep. If your garden allows it, you can add a trellis to the pots and the plants will grow taller. They will still grow in the shade, but you may want to move the pots around to keep them off the ground.

When the plant starts to grow back, it may be difficult to remove the plant, so make sure you don't over water it. Overwatering the plants causes the roots to go deeper into the soil and this will stunt their growth. Sweet potatoes will produce a lot of leaves - they have a shallow root system and this means the plant will grow quickly - you just need to water them often.
